Digital video is much more flexible, less expensive and easier to deliver than analogue video, for which reasons it is for most purposes the better solution unless the very highest quality onscreen video is required. Having said this it must be remembered that the technology of digital video is advancing extremely rapidly, and the quality of digital video will almost certainly match that of analogue in the near future. Already some experimental digital systems can produce video of an extremely high standard that is very close to the best that can be produced by analogue means.
Digital video may be delivered either in hardware ( ie with a board in the computer to handle the video processing) or in software. The former provides the best quality video but it does have the drawback that a board must be provided in each delivery machine. Digital video of a reasonable quality may now be delivered in software-only on most modern PC's and Macintosh computers, but either the video window must be very small or the frame rate must remain low if reasonable picture quality is to be maintained.
